It's been called the most dangerous weapon in China's arsenal โ a missile designed specifically to keep American aircraft carriers 1,500 kilometers away from a Taiwan conflict. The DF-21D anti-ship ballistic missile, nicknamed the "Carrier Killer," has fundamentally changed the calculus of naval warfare in the Western Pacific.
But does it actually work? Let's break it down.
What Is the DF-21D?

Why the DF-21D Doesn't Change the Fundamental Calculus

The kill chain required to hit a moving ship at 1,500km remains unproven in combat and faces multiple layers of countermeasures.
More importantly, the DF-21D does not solve the aggressor's fundamental problem: Taiwan's layered defenses โ anti-ship missiles, mines, submarines, and coastal fortifications โ operate independently of carrier positioning.
